The shape and appearance of the ears is a
concern for some Atlanta cosmetic surgery patients. Ears
which are especially prominent or protruding can be a source
of embarrassment or even alter the hairstyles a person may
consider. Some patients may have asymmetries between the
ears or suffer from earlobe deformities because of trauma or
scarring. These problems can be effectively treated by
surgical modification of the ear tissue, including cartilage
and skin. At Milton Hall Plastic Surgery our facial plastic
surgeons are trained to manage these cosmetic problems in
both children and adults.
Atlanta otoplasty patients presenting as adults are
evaluated for the overall size, symmetry and balance of the
ears relative to the other facial features. There are
several parts of the ear cartilage which, when shaped
improperly, may cause abnormal protrusion or size of one or
both ears. Our surgeons will discuss what the specific
problems are with you and determine the technique or
techniques best suited to improve the appearance of the
ears.
Children of any age may be ridiculed by their peers because
of abnormally protruding ears. For any child whose
appearance causes concern, otoplasty, "ear pinning" should
be considered before peer pressure begins to play a
significant role in the child's self-esteem, typically age
six or seven. Our surgeons meet with both the child and
parents to determine when the best time to consider
corrective surgery for that individual.
Atlanta cosmetic surgery patients also may present with
earlobes which have been torn or with enlarged piercings
which have become unsightly. Occasionally keloid scarring
can occur around an ear piercing as well. Patients with
these problems are confronted with not just the appearance
of the earlobe but also the inability to wear earrings.
Correction or earlobe damage may often be performed under
local anesthesia and in most cases the ear can be re-pierced
after healing is complete.
