Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can be one of the most
dramatic procedures used to improve the appearance of
patients with premature aging. Blepharoplasty is a
safe, effective plastic surgery procedure performed to
restore a more youthful appearance and less fatigued look to
the eyes and upper face while maintaining normal function.
Atlanta blepharoplasty involves removing or repositioning
excessive skin and fat around the eyelids, and is one of the
most popular facial plastic surgery procedures. This
procedure provides a more open, relaxed look around the
eyes, increasing expressivity and improving the heavy, tired
look many people may develop even early in adulthood.
Atlanta blepharoplasty patients coming to our office are
often focused only on improving the appearance of the
eyelids themselves rather than the overall picture.
Blepharoplasty alone is not always the answer to redundant
skin about the eyes. The upper face works as a unit
and premature aging and drooping of the brow can cause a
tired, angry look with frown lines and sagging skin.
In some cases the redundant skin seen in the upper lid is
not excess lid skin at all but rather a fold created by a
drooping brow. Frequently our patients at Milton Hall
Plastic Surgery find their best result comes from combining
upper eyelid surgery and a browlift.
Lower eyelids may have excess skin or a puffy appearance,
contributing to a tired appearance and sometimes dark
circles beneath the eyes. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty
is performed to correct the contour of the lids and remove
excess skin if necessary. Excess fatty tissue may be
removed or repositioned as required to create a pleasing
lower lid contour. The procedure may often be
performed through an incision inside the lid, leaving no
visible scar. As part of any lower lid procedure your
surgeon will evaluate the midface and in some cases may
recommend volume restoration or midface lift to best improve
the appearance of the lower lid area.
Along with baggy eyelid skin, many Atlanta blepharoplasty
patients have troublesome lines in the area surrounding the
eyes. Blepharoplasty can improve some visible facial
lines and wrinkles but it will not address all the
superficial lines that come from premature aging,
overexposure to weather and dynamic muscle motion.
Blepharoplasty is primarily intended to address excess skin
and fat; skin resurfacing such as chemical peels and
nitrogen plasma resurfacing treats textural wrinkles and
imperfections.
During consultation some Atlanta blepharoplasty patients
find they are not ready for cosmetic surgery and may be
better served with conservative measures. In the area
surrounding the eyes Botox is very effective in reducing
dynamic wrinkles and injectable fillers such as Juvederm may
improve the midface contours or deeper wrinkles.
During consultation at Milton Hall Plastic Surgery we
frequently use videoimaging and before and after photos to
help patients see just what can be accomplished. In
some cases it proves beneficial to combine an eyelid lift
with other cosmetic surgery. Facelifts, chin implants,
cheek implants, rhinoplasty (nasal surgery), otoplasty (ear
surgery) and skin resurfacing can also be performed in
conjunction with blepharoplasty.
